kathcake: I believe that the decision to deny having a law allowing euthuanisa is the wrong one. They state that if it was made legal then more and more old age pensioners would feel they 'had' to take their lives just so they're not a burden anymore. However I feel the chances of sane, old people in their right mind will not even think of taking this option. I believe it should be legalised to prevent the needless suffering of those with mentally, and physically debilitating illnesses that will one day take away every function that makes them human. As their diseases take hold they lose their ability to swallow, to talk, to look after themselves and retain that tiny bit of dignity. They are basically a vegtable and who in their right mind would want to live their life like that? They should be able to go when they want before the disease completely takes hold. It's legal in Switzerland and how many unlawful deaths from Euthaniasa have happened there? Not many from what i've read. It's not fair to make people suffer like this, if pets can be put down if the quality of their lives is diminished then why are humans denied this choice? What do you think ? Do you agree or disagree?
apples: I think it's fair for people who are not mentally ill to be able to choose such a course of action, when they are healthy enough to do so, but the mentally ill shouldn't be able to. That all comes back to being 'of sound mind' - in order to make that decision they need to be able to reason. For people of sound mind I can't see any reason against allowing it. I know if I got to the point where I could no longer function (eat, talk etc), I would want to finish it rather sharply as that would drive me nuts!
DrStrangelove: ok but who makes the decision. As you say you are no longer able to function so should a doctor, family, the state make the decision. this is where the problem is. i dont beleive a family member should have this power nor should the state. in the past the state has been allowed terrible mistakes to happen. so where does this leave us
AgroMan: If you want to end your own life why not! there is no real way to stop someone who has made their mind up. if someone is terminally ill and in pain i think they should be allowed to exit with grace
left4ded: Pain and prolonged suffering is not a way I would wish to see out my living days on this planet. Give me a choice to end the torment and die in dignity without my friends or family fearing repercutions of prosecution!
